Casey from New York asks, Do you recommend a DJ or a band? Is it possible to do both?
Music can make or break a wedding celebration, no doubt about it! Having the right music at your reception is important to setting the mood and making sure your guests have a great time, so make sure to put a lot of thought in what would be best for YOUR guests.
There are pros and cons to each, so let’s consider a band first. There is nothing like a live wedding band to get a crowd excited and ready to have a good time, while creating a sense of sophistication. But bands can be more expensive than DJs and bands also can’t keep a huge selection of music on hand like a DJ would. DJs offer a mix of musical styles for all ages and they’re usually less expensive than a band. In addition, a DJ with great emcee skills will can really set the mood and keep the party going. But if the DJ doesn’t have a good personality and stage presence it has the potential to ruin the party.
Most importantly, make sure the band or DJ knows what they’re doing. I’ve attended a few weddings before where the family had to tell the DJ to get the party started. Pretty embarrassing, and not the way to start the night! Yet another reason to hire a wedding planner so we can go over exact expectations and time line with the band/DJ.
If it could possibly fit in your budget, I would definitely recommend having both a DJ and a band. I would start the night off with a band and end the night with a DJ! A band will start your wedding reception off with a bang and will the crowd excited and ready to have a great time! Once the band has finished the DJ will take over and will have your guests dancing the night away with current hits!
Just remember this is your wedding, so decide what will make you the happiest!
