We are so excited to share with you today Rachel and John’s adventure theme engagement session shot by the talented Carolyn Marie Photography.  Downtown Durham and Eno River State Park proved to be the perfect locations for Rachel and John’s easy-going and light-hearted personalities to shine through!  Their love for one another and zest for life is infectious!  We can not wait for their May 2016 wedding at The Umstead Hotel and Spa!

We hope you enjoy their stunning images as much as we do!  Thanks to Carolyn Marie for capturing such a fun filled day!

How did John propose?

We actually already had our wedding date and venue locked in before we were engaged! So I knew we were going to get married, but I didn’t know when the proposal would be (which was kind of fun)! John planned a special date and wouldn’t tell me what we’d be doing or where we were going. You may think I’d be suspicious at that point, but John likes to plan surprise dates sometimes, so it didn’t seem too out of the ordinary. I also didn’t think that he had asked my parents for the engagement ring yet, as my parents had given the amazing offer that I could wear my grandmother’s ring. So he took me out to a delicious, fancy dinner, and then told me he needed to stop by my apartment before Date Part 2. After he’d gone up to my apartment, he called and asked me to help him bring something down to the car. When I opened the door, there was music playing, and my apartment was overflowing with flowers, candles, and strings of lights! And there was John, getting down on one knee. 🙂

So far, what aspect of planning the wedding has been the most enjoyable?

Dress shopping! Though we have menu and dessert tasting scheduled soon, and I anticipate that those activities may take the cake.

Do you have any advice for recently engaged brides to help them stay stress-free throughout the planning process?

Our wedding planner, Kelley Ann, has broken down tasks and created a plan for what needs to happen each month as the wedding approaches. This has been super helpful and has played a huge role in reducing my wedding-planning stress! I know what I need to knock out each month- and when those tasks are done, I can relax, because I know everything is on track.

What are you most excited about for the day of the wedding?

Wow, what a difficult question! Of course, I’m MOST excited about marrying my best friend. But we’ve also had fun planning how the day will go, so there’s lots of other things to be excited about too! One aspect of our day that I’m looking forward to is contra dancing! John and I went contra dancing (which is sort of like folk/line/square dancing) on our second date, and it’s always been something we enjoy doing together. While navigating the decision of whether or not to have a dance floor for our morning wedding, we decided that contra dancing was a great alternative to the type of dancing that usually happens at an evening wedding.

What are three words to describe the feel of your upcoming wedding?

Classy fun brunch 🙂

What made you decide to hire a planner?

With our crazy busy lives, we knew hiring a planner would help keep us on track, come up with ideas, and figure out when things needed to get done! It’s honestly been such a wonderful, stress-reducing experience working with Kelley Ann. Neither of us knew how much goes into planning a wedding. Kelley Ann has helped us to plan our day by using our style and personalities to narrow down the truly overwhelming amount of options that can accompany nearly every wedding decision!
