Wedding Etiquette Wednesday: Reply Card Etiquette

You have finalized the wording for your wedding invitation, but have you given your reply card any thought? The reply card is very important, because it provides you with an accurate guest count! The reply card and self-addressed envelope are sent with the formal invitation for your guests to send back to you. You must make sure to include the return address, as well as a stamp on the enclosed envelope. The formality of the wording is up to you, but it should be based around the formality of your wedding invitation.

The wording can vary on each reply card. If the reply card is informal, you can simply include a space for the guests to write their names, as well as how many guests are attending. If you are having assigned seating, it is necessary to have a designated space for the guest to write their names, as well as how many guests plan to attend, so that you know how many place cards to make.

We like to recommend to couples that they include all names of those invited on the reply card, so that it is clear who is invited to attend. You can also include an exact number of seats that will be held for those that are invited, so guests know they cannot bring a guest. If you choose not to invite children, then this is a great option of making that clear.

You must also include entree selections, such as chicken, beef or fish, if you are having a plated meal. The typical reply date is 2-4 weeks before the wedding, but some caterers and venues may need to know before then. You must check with them to make sure that is ample time!

Here is an example of a basic reply card with from Basic Invite:

The example below includes meal choices:

M________________________
_____ accepts _____regrets
Please select an entrée
___beef
___chicken
___vegetarian option

If you would like to include a specific number of seats you can include this:

_2__ seats have been reserved for you

OR

The favour of a reply is requested before the sixth of October

Mr. and Mrs. William Godley

___ of 2 guests will be attending

We hope this helps!  If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact us or leave a comment!
